Here’s a recent shot sent to us from Johnny Maher out at large El Gringo. Yes this is the same break the WCT event was held at a few years ago. They never rode it this big and according to Johnny this wasn’t the biggest day he’s seen since he’s been down there. A photographer came through and snapped a few on this day. Johnny said this was two days after the peak day.

This is the same break where Adriano De Souza took an urchin to the head and had to leave the event due to injuries. Johnny is wondering where everyone is at. He’s seen a couple of guys on the medium sized days but it’s empty all the rest of the days. So if you feel like charging a slab reef with one guy out, fly down and join Johnny. He’ll be happy to see someone. This is his first trip there and there is a dark purple blob of a swell heading his way soon. I hope there is a photographer around to capture his upcoming sessions. Monster is mental!

Nate Cintas Jr. joined the Matuse Family in 2007. Nate is a local shredder who hails from the Point Loma area. Nate competes in the NSSA and travels during the summer chasing waves in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean.

Nate began the 2009 NSSA Explorer season with a gut full of butterflies. He was ranked 30th out of 58 kids, 18yrs old and under, after his first few contests. Although he had won several local events, the NSSA introduced a new group of polished young surfers that were very aggressive in the water.

Nate stepped it up, and was ranked 21st, then 15th, then 13th. He finally made a quarter final, and was ranked 10th. The following event Nate went to the semi’s and stepped up to the 8th position. That was when Nate realized he had the ability and drive to become one of the top 5 competitors. The following contest was held at Ocean Beach, and Nate had the confidence and drive to receive 2nd place, ranking him 5th overall.

Two weeks ago he traveled to Huntington Beach to compete in the backyard of some of the hottest competitors in the NSSA. It was a glorious day for Nate, and he won the event. Nate is now ranked 3rd overall in the Southwestern Conference of the NSSA 18 & under competition.

Hello Friends at Matuse,

Just want to say thank you for the wetsuits. We been trying them for several sessions now. Even though my Hoplite fullsuit is only a 5/4/3 it works good even with the temperature below zero Celsius. The other day, I surfed the 5/4/3 in minus 5 degree weather with a lot of wind and no sun. Looking forward to testing out the Tumo fullsuit with hood attached!

Matuse Family Member Chris Del Moro is one of the featured riders in Thomas Campbell’s new film release titled “The Present”. This highly anticipated film will debut this Friday at La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas. The surf world will be out in full force.
