Hello All,

Flynn here with an update about my last week.

The HIC Pipeline Pro was held last Friday in 8 to 12 foot RAW Pipeline. It was extremely shallow, second reefing, closing out, and wild to say the least. I’m never usually frightened out at Pipeline, but that day was something else!

The contest was held in order to qualify 8 surfers into the Pipeline Masters. 6 had already been voted in, totaling 14 “pipeline specialists” into the main event against the top 45 WCT surfers. Once the Quarterfinals were over, they ended the event. The remaining 8 surfers qualified, and I was one of them.

In my last heat, I had a 7 and an 8, I was winning by far, and in the last 2 minutes a big set lined up and I caught one that looked good. But being the unruly, unpredictable swell that it was, the wave quickly zipped off while I was in the barrel, the bottom dropped out exposing dry reef. I was thrown directly on my back, thumping my tailbone and head. I was taken to the beach by the Water Patrol, and helped up the beach by my friends and lifeguards. I ended up getting 4 staples in my head and deeply bruising my ass region. I’m fine now, still a bit bruised, but totally fine, going to yoga, and the chiropractor regularly, as well as eating well.

The awards ceremony was a bit emotional as I was awarded the Todd Chesser Memorial award for “hard charging & good sportsmanship.” Todd was a really good friend of mine and I felt that it was ironic since he totally mentored me. For me, that award is probably my greatest achievement ever.

That day I literally broke my ass working, but it was all worth it, and I just wanted to let you all know how everything is going. I hope all is well.

The recent winter swells that hit California has brought some great surf. If you stayed on it you would have found some great pockets of weather that made for good surf conditions. It’s not always bad when the rain comes. As long as your immune system is strong and you have a bit of luck you can survive the worst of waters during and after a strong rain.

I do not recommend it but we all know we do it from time to time: against all warning signs we paddle out to catch a perfect wave and think in our heads, “don’t swallow any water”, as if that will help protect us.

A recent photo was sent to us from an afternoon session in San Diego at a famous point break. As you can see the waves were good and a ton of people were out. One of our friends spotted a lucky San Diego CHP officer leaving the scene of a mid-day surf session.

Not a bad advertisment for Matuse as he cruised the PCH in our Hoplite 4:3:2. Who knows, our wetsuits might start a new motocycle trend. Who cares if it rains while riding a motorcycle as long as you’re wearing a Matuse wetsuit. Props to the officer for making sure there was order in the lineup. I wonder if the board rack is city issued?
