Check out the recent opening ceremony for the Eddie Aikau contest. With the anticipation of the approaching swell there was extra buzz in the air for an already exciting ceremony. Punctuated by the presence of the Hokule’a the opening ceremony was truly special. Check out photos #10 and #13. Jamie Sterling representing the Matuse Family in this year’s event. We hope the contest runs this year and that Jamie does really well.

and check out Round 96, Heat 14 to see Flynn’s heat. This is the second jewel of the Vans Triple crown held at Sunset Beach on the North shore of Oahu. Contestants wait as a swell is on it’s way. Flynn will be surfing in Heat #14 in the Round of 64. Looks like the event organizers have the contest on hold until 8am tomorrow (Thursday). Click Here to check it out.

Check out Matuse Family Member, Pat Millin, in a recent article in The Australian (The Heart of The Nation). The online publication for Australia featured the recent journey Pat and a few friends took to Norway and the Northern European coastline in search of uncharted waves and adventure. Check the excerpt from the article below:
“In fact, Pat Millin, the most extroverted of the group, made a heroic effort to strengthen US-Norwegian relations. “She worked at the place where we were staying,” he says. “She was so hot. Norwegian girls have skin that has never seen the sun. It’s like porcelain. We were like, ‘Oh my god, they’re beautiful.’ At first, this girl, Hilda” – he pauses and repeats “Hiiiildaaa!” in a comical Norwegian accent – “she was a bit icy. I was like, ‘What’s wrong with this girl?’ But then I just kept rapping with her and being flirty, building a relationship…”
Millin has fond memories of the trip, and not just thanks to Hilda. “I’m totally into that cold, raw feel,” he says, “especially in this day and age, when every other surf spot is surfed out. It’s pretty rare to come along and find a spot for the first time and name it.” (According to surfing tradition, the first person to catch a wave at a break assumes naming rights, which the group did on several occasions.) “It just made me in awe of the world. It’s so untouched up there. I was so inspired by the whole coastline. It’s like being near the tip of a mountain, going snowboarding, but you’re at the beach. I’d keep forgetting that I was at the beach. That was radical, coming from southern California.”

Matuse Family,
The acting teacher I study under is awesome. He’s the not the stereotypical beret wearing beatnik who spouts esoteric nonsense, this guy is a mans-man. Apart from trying to help me perfect ‘the craft’, talking about the Steelers, and offering pearls of wisdom, John is the consultant to the soap opera “General Hospital”
Today John (my teacher) took me to follow him around GH and see how they film soaps (which was much faster and more streamlined than anything I’ve ever been in). I watched on set and in the editing box as the actors did their thing. These guys are pros, they film an entire episode every day (5 days a week, stopping only on major holidays). The actors are ready to shoot the scene 5 minutes after reading the sides. All in all, it was a fun thing to watch and FYI, Port Charles has some really attractive female residents.

Hey Fellas,
Just returned from my maiden voyage to Mavericks this year with my new Tumo 5/4/3. I’m not going to lie, the water was freezing and the wind was blowing a steady 20 knots out of the north. Not an issue for this kid. The Geoprene kept me toasty and warm from the moment we hit the water until we paddled in nearly 4 hours later. Props to Johnny and his new Mystery Machine van for letting me sit shotgun on our drive up there. We met up with fellow SD friends Derek and JoJo for our session. Here’s a couple photos from our journey. Thanks for keeping us warm!
