J Waters: Bag Raiders

Bag Raiders is a really legit house group out of Australia started by DJs Chris Stracey and Jack Glass. They were ranked 11 on inthemix’s top 50 DJ’s of Australia in 2009 and definitely have the talent to back up the ranking. The first song listed here was used as the beat to The White Panda’s remix “Shooting Superstars” while the second track is an upbeat remix of Cut Copy’s “Far Away”. The third is a raucous, techno vibed, bass thumping track that should roll you in and out of Thanksgiving pretty well.

A TASTE OF ORKNEY

Daniel Jones: OrkneyPhotos: Michael Kew

It was with boardbags and hooded 5-mils heralding the Hatston Ferry Terminal arrival of central California’s Josh Mulcoy, Hawaii’s Daniel Jones, and transient American Warren Smith this first night of October. For seven hours from Aberdeen the 410-foot-long MV Hrossey had steamed through a violent North Sea, at last rumbling into Kirkwall’s harbor five minutes to midnight. “That was weird,” Mulcoy said, collecting his bags. “Definitely the closest I’ve ever come to being seasick.” Smith too was nauseous. Jones just laughed as we loaded the rental car. The cold wind flung sleet around us, and it was the first time his duffel had housed so much wetsuit. “I’d love to come and freeze my ass off with you guys,” he’d told me a week prior. The humble Hawaiian was keen for something new.

J Waters: Q Soul Bossa Nostra

Though I will partake in fisticuffs with any man, woman, or child who debates that Quincy Jones’s greatest contribution to this earth is his daughter Rashida Jones, I’ll admit that the man was responsible for some pretty legit music in the past couple decades as well. For this very reason, a bunch of current artists have done an album remixing his best songs. It’s called “Q Soul Bossa Nostra” and features everyone from your favorite Amy Winehouse to Three-6 Mafia. However, the two cuts provided showcase some Atlanta talent, one with Ludacris and the other with T.I. and his buddy B.o.B.

J Waters: Yeezy

As you may know, Kanye West’s new album dropped today, and it’s a near masterpiece. Here’s a little background on this incredible artist to give you some perspective of how incredibly his career has blossomed. In college, Kanye began producing for local artists. Shortly after enrolling, he dropped out and began to focus on his music career. In 2000, he began producing for Roc-A-Fella records. First, he produced for Jay-Z, then Nas, Mos Def and other esteemed artists. However, Kanye wanted to rap as well, but apart from a few verses for Hova, it was not until 2004 that his first album The College Dropout came out. Kanye West, as he is known today, came to fruition when this album was released. In case you’ve forgotten, “Jesus Walks”, “Through the Wire”and “All Falls Down” were amongst the melee of musical goodness released on that album.

Since 2004, he has dropped three other albums. These include Late Registration, Graduation and 808’s & Heartbreak. Since August, and until December, Kanye has been releasing a song every Friday called GOOD Friday with some of the most talented artists in the field as well. Currently, his newest album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy dropped today, November 22nd, 2010. In addition, he supposedly has a collab album with Jay-Z set to debut sometime in 2011. West’s albums have all reached incredible heights and there is no doubt the record sales will be off the charts on this one too. The production is phenomenal and the lyrics/rapping/singing match up as the album weaves the listener through the dark twisted fantasy that is Kanye’s mind. You may not like his personality, but you cannot argue with the musical genius of this album. He has done it again. Definitely give it a listen.

As we did with the Cudi album, instead of leaks off the album, we’ll be showing you a collab he did with Lupe and Pharell, a hidden track off of Graduation that seems to be impossible to find unless you got the album on its drop date featuring John Mayer and a few remixes.
