J Waters: Stillness Is The Move

Stillness Is The Move by Dirty Projectors is one of my all time favorite songs that I heard today for the first time in a while. It has an awesome beat and the video is strange, but I love it because its funky and different- two perfect adjectives to describe the Dirty Projectors . Plus, I find that Domino Records does videos for pretty awesome bands. I decided I’d throw in the Solange remix too- her voice is amazing.

Winter Warmer: Madagascar

Kew: MadagascarPhoto: Michael Kew

Surfing there was worrisome for me. The trades blew sideshore/offshore at the Velzylandish right, and usually it was the only spot to ride. It was also the most consistent, taking any southern swell—windswell or ground—and warping it into a clean barrel within spitting distance of black urchins and bare pink coral. The waves were uncatchable anywhere but on the initial bowl—shoulder-hopping was impossible—and if you fell, you hit reef. The nearest hospital was two hours away via rough dirt roads, and the wave broke a kilometer from shore, requiring a sketchy paddle over deep, murky water alongside a reef where fishermen set traps and nets. Once in the lineup sitting on my board, I couldn’t see my feet and felt like bait—out of all my time surfing alone at sharky surf spots worldwide, nothing rivaled the spookiness of Madagascar.

J Waters: Black Kids, the band, with Weezy

This is such an awesome remix of The Black Kids’ “Not Gonna Teach Him” by The Twelves. It’s so awesome, Weezy F Baby is thrown on at the end. Alt rock? Weezy? Don’t worry, this is a remarkable remix, rather than a repugnant Rebirth rock track.

Matuse Family: Jeremy Rumas In Indiana

Jeremy Rumas: IndianaPhotos: Peter Matushek

Dear Matuse Family,

It’s freezing but it beats sitting inside. My friend Peter Matushek shot a few photos after he got out of the water. Peter said, “I couldn’t put my eye to the viewfinder because of the ice on my hood. I was just clicking away and hoping for the best”. This is in Indiana. You can’t see in the photos but there were big solid nasty chunks of ice in the water all over. I thought you’d get a kick out of seeing some really cold surf conditions. The water temp this day was 32 degrees. I really love this 6:5:4 Hooded Tumo, and it has by far the best rubber I have ever felt in a suit…paddling in it is like wearing a 3:2. It fits me like a glove too. Thanks and Happy New Year.
