Here are some more pictures from Joel Tudor’s Duct Tape Invitational from Santa Cruz Last week. Sun, surf and skateboarding…looks like a fun weekend.

J Waters: Ground Up

Ground Up out of PA has been gaining a lot of traction lately and will even be playing a show with Chris Webby of CT pretty soon. They’ve got serious flow and the production is excellent with some help from quality sampling. First song samples Vienna by Billy Joel in case you’re wondering. If you like them, find out where to download their latest mixtape, “Girls Who Smoke Cigarettes” at the link below.

Derek states, “Recently, I have been trying to get a few California photos in hopes of finishing my Tail Camera Project. The last few years I took the camera setup to Mexico and Tavarua. I am putting together my best 4-5 images for the upcoming LA Nixon Art Mosh. In this pic I was messing around with the shutter speed.” We’re looking forward to seeing all the shots.

Matuse Family: Chadd Konig

J Waters: Blue Skies, Sunshine

This is an awesome track by Masta Ace. The sample used  is called “Lazy Day” by Spanky & Our Gang. It’s an airy, poppy song released in the summer of 1967 about a walk in the park. Masta Ace marvelously turns this track into a critique of the hood, showing how it’s not all good. Really cool how the sample takes the mood into a summer vibe when the lyrics are meant to depict the complete opposite.

Last weekend Santa Cruz played host to Joel Tudor’s Duct Tape Invitational. A contest of sorts yet the vibe and rules were much different from the norm of today. Steamer Lane came alive and served up some great surf. Legends, style and smiles seemed to be in abundance at this event.
