Nick Potash Scrimshaw Revisited

nickpotash_01

Nick Potash’s craft really speaks for itself; a surfer from La Jolla, Nick moved away from the beach that he called home to pursue his talents in the City of Angels. Once in L.A. he has been producing amazing work both in his jewelry and on canvas. Truly a man of many talents.

His jewelry is made with Scrimshaw, considered the only truly American art form.  Scrimshaw originated with the Inuits carving art on to bone, but was brought to new heights in the 1800s with the boom in the whaling industry which took men out to sea for months on end. To curb boredom they would carve trinkets and treasures for loved ones back home. While whaling is now viewed in a much different light, this intensely intricate art form has nearly vanished in the last 100 years making all surviving examples treasures rich with history and sentiment.
