DEMPSEY HOLDER OCEAN FESTIVAL

Community, kids and good positive vibes – that’ll be the scene once again at WILDCOAST’s 11th Annual Dempsey Holder Ocean Festival and Surf Contest this Sunday, the 28th, in Imperial Beach. The Dempsey is South San Diego County’s largest and longest running surf contest, with divisions for all ages, levels and forms of wave-riding. In partnership with the Imperial Beach Chamber of Commerce, this year’s event includes a Blues and BBQ Festival that will take place at the Imperial Beach Pier Plaza from 10am-5pm, with great food and music that the whole fam will enjoy. And once again, WILDCOAST will be partnering with UAPO (United Athletes of the Pacific Ocean) to make the Dempsey an international event with participants from throughout Latin America.

THRU THE SURFACE

Big ups to Matuse family member Clifford Kapono and Clint Edwards. Surfing has brought massive attention to waves in Hawaii, Fiji, Micronesia and Tahiti, making these reefs arguably the most famous pieces of ocean floor in the world. But we know almost nothing about the structure and health status of the coral reefs under these waves as none of them have ever really been studied from an actual scientific standpoint … despite their importance to the communities outside of surfing that also rely on them (ie reefs = fish habitat). Cliff and Clint will be working with each other to get recognized and funded by the National Geographic Expeditions Granted program. A panel of National Geographic judges will select 10 finalists out of the 700+ entrants and from there one winner will be selected by a public vote Sept 16-18. Support them in their search and quest to the finals. Much love and respect! Can’t Knock Their Hustle.
