Matuse Family: Mikala Jones In China

Dear Matuse Family,

Here’s a bunch of pictures from China. I had a blast. It was like surfing a 20 mile race down a river four days in row. I’m sure if you where to ride a tidal wave up a river this is what it would feel and look like. We had a great crew and I was teamed up with my best friend Jamie Sterling. Endless Summer legend Wingnut and Mary Osborne were the other surfers on the trip. The City of Hangzhou took really good care of us. I’m honored to have been invited to take part in the Silver Dragon River Festival. Big aloha to everyone that made this trip possible.

Matuse Family: Zach Plopper Euro Tour

Kaixo (basque for hello),

The euro tour continues. Since my last news, we have: visited my old haunts in Santander – staying in a renovated ancient mountain dwelling owned by my good friend; surfed cranking Mundaka on the first fall-esque swell of the season; harvested apples in the french basque countryside at my friend’s apple orchards in preparation for his cider festival; surfed 6-8 foot Hossegor alone, and then again with Julian Wilson, Owne Wright, Jadsen Andre and Mick Fanning; went to a movie showing at San Sebastian’s renowned film festival; went to an Atletico Bilbao soccer game with one of Spain’s national hero soccer players – Igor Gabilondo; sipped basque txacoli (crisp local white wine) atop a rocky verdant hillside while watching the sun dip into the Atlantic; ate delicious pizza in Hossegor next to Tom Whitaker, Luke Munro and Dion Agius; and drank about 55 cafe’s con leche. Right now it is pouring rain outside and we are debating between going to the Bilbao Barcelona game, celebrating my friends apple harvest at his annual cider festival or going to Mundaka to catch another swell. Hope everyone is well

The past NW swell brought some fun waves to the North Shore of Oahu. Matuse Family Member, Daniel Jones, finds a nice inside bowl to bash at Sunset. Daniel just came back from a trip down into Indonesia. It’s always nice to step off the plane at home and step right into perfect right hand peelers. It also helps if you live on the North Shore.

Sterls & Mj: China Tidal Bore

Dear Matuse Family,

I’m on my way home after a very successful trip to China. I spent 6 days there surfing the Qiantang River in the city of Hangzhou. The wave is a tidal bore that is dependent upon the tides. I teamed up with Mikala Jones, Mary Osbourne and Wingnut to ride this unique wave. Here are some frame grabs from my HD video camera and some pictures from my hotel roof. It was an amazing experience but I’m glad to be headed home. It looks like Hawaii is about to get some solid surf this week!

Happening: 16th Annual Jetty Kid Surf Kontest

UAPO Grom Contest

Dear Matuse Family,

The 16th Annual Jetty Kid Surf Kontest in memory of Keith Noel this past weekend in Mission Beach was a huge success for the kids. One of UAPO’s own team rider, Valentina Perez (from Ensenada Baja California), placed 3rd in the 8-9 yr old division. She won a trophy and a new wetsuit. It was a beautiful sunny day with small but fun surf. Everyone had a great time. Other standouts were Delta Nelson Ramirez (7), Mateo Mendez (6), and Carlos Armenta(7). They participated in the super menehune division (7 and under). Barbara Nelson Ramirez (8) made the semifinals in the Menehune girsl 8-9 Division. Also Guayo Argueta Hussong, Jan Pingarron, Mateo Fernandez, and Emilio Romero had very close heats in the Menehune 8-9 boys division. Emilia Perez and Macarena Fernandez participated and are part of the team as well. Congratulations to all of them!
