Matuse Family: Mikala Jones POV

Mikala Jones POV

Check out Matuse Family Member, Mikala Jones, gracefully bailing in the tube. A great perspective of what it looks like when you don’t make it. MJ in the 2nd to last frame looks like he’s running on the trench that’s ripping open just beneath him. Only problem is the reef below is pretty shallow.

Tudor Duct Tape

The Vans Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitational started this Thursday, October 14, and will finish Friday, October 15, in Montauk, N.Y., at Ditch Plains on the eastern most tip of Long Island. “The Duct Tape Invitational is special because it shows longboarding the way it should be,” says contest director and Vans team rider Joel Tudor. “It also highlights some of my favorite young loggers, guys that represent the next generation of longboarding.” Contestants are required to surf single-fin longboards, weighing no less than twelve pounds, and ride without a leash. Matuse Family: Luke – Dark Fall Premiere, NYC

Dark Fall

Dear Matuse Family,

A few weeks ago, the NYSFF (New York Surf Film Festival) took over Tri-Beca cinemas for a few days. Along with the open bar and loads of liquored up people, there were tons of good films that were shown. Julian’s new movie, Reef’s new film, Dane Reynold’s new profile film and tons more. Despite all the mainstream names I just listed, OUR film, Dark Fall, took the Viewers Choice and Film of the Year awards! The film was produced, filmed, edited and conceived by two of my good friends, Alex DePhillipo and Andrew Gesler. Taylor Steele was there supporting the film and also a few of his that premiered. Seeing a documentary about all of us from Jersey receiving international praise is an amazing thing. Next up is X Dance, the Surfer Poll Awards and hopefully Sundance. Everyone go to Surfer Poll and cast your vote for Dark Fall (http://www.surferpoll.com/).

Matuse Family: Brett Jones – Northern California

Brett Jones

Dear Matuse Family,

Here are a few snap shots from my resent Northern California trip. Lisa and I needed some Ichiban in our lives so we charged up north. First stop was my mom’s place near Fort Jones CA. It was good to see my mom and take in some nature. I got some time to give surfing a break and do things like horse back riding, kayaking and fishing.

On are way home we rolled through Davis, Sacramento, Napa and San Francisco. We stopped at the Golden Gate Bridge and Fort Point was breaking, I was on it! The water was chilly and the tourists were everywhere. I slipped into my Hoplite 432 and went solo assassin on it. The wave is tricky and you can’t just go out there and own it. There are rocks, oil tankers, and heavy locals. I was lucky to get in there incognito.

We took highway 101 all the way home and the scenery was beautiful. It was one long surf check. We also had a chance to stop in Santa Cruz and Ventura for some cold sessions. Over all it was a great road trip. A Special thanks to Jim Hagen for lending me his vehicle and to Forrest Kohere for taking some great photos under the bridge.

Matuse Family: Zach Plopper – Euro Tour

Zach Plopper

Dear Matuse Family,

There is about 12 hours left for my Euro tour 2010. It has been a maximized old world experience. After a few days in the north coast Spanish province of Asturias, home to one of the world’s best left hand river mouth point breaks and heavy cider consumption, I darted across the Iberian Peninsula once more to my starting point in Ericeira, Portugal. It rained the entire 10 hour journey adding to the experience of the dreary ancient ghost towns I traveled through that probably haven’t seen an inhabitant since the civil war which ended here 70 years ago (Quite fitting as I read Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia about his experience fighting for the Republicans). The rain let up slightly yesterday and I toured the old part of Lisbon, getting lost in the dodgy port district and nearly getting sideswiped as I went through a red light in the city’s central roundabout (I thought the whole purpose of a roundabout was so you didn’t need a stop light). A rolled-cigarette-smoking semi-transient directed me to some “free” parking and I hit the city for a while. To my surprise the car was there when I returned, wheels and all. The surf has been massive in Ericeira the past few days and no one has been surfing so I have had several lonely heart-in-throat surfs at the local slabs. I am hoping to get one more surf in before I venture out to my last fish and vino verde feast. Tomorrow at this time I will be high above the Atlantic en-route to the new world. Nos vemos pronto!
