Daniel Jones in Alaska

So what does a Hawaiian born North Shore local do as summer hits Hawaii? Head to Alaska of course. Michael Kew phoned Daniel and he was in for the trip. Scott Dickerson of Surf Alaska provided the boat and logistics to score the best waves. Kew said, “Water temp was 37, didn’t see another human for the 10 days we were aboard the boat, waves were pretty small but fun and clean, and emtpy. Being a Hawaiian, DJ seemed to have zero problem adjusting to the frigid water temps, but it’s obvious that his Matuse gear played the major part in that.” Look for a future article from their trip.

Gage Hingeley – Black & White

Matuse Family Member Gage Hingeley is a local San Diegan who is developing his skills as a photographer. At 16 years young he is showing a lot of talent and enthusiasm for this art form. Below are some recent submissions of Gage’s B&W imagery. Gage says, “B/W always intrigues me because it’s up to tones, lines, composition and subjects to capture the audience.” Take a look for yourself.

GH: I took this last night on the side of the road of Hwy 101. I have always wanted to find a lonesome tree and photograph it and I finally got this one. Interesting.

GH: Some swell coming in between Blacks and Scripps from a little lookout spot.

GH: Half b/w and a circle of color. Taken up at Julian when we had some snow – some grass popping through the white snowflakes.

GH: This photo I just found. I don’t really remember where it was taken, I am guessing WindanSea from the look of the houses. This was shot right before dark.

Bula Matuse Family!

It’s been a while since I’ve written a post, so jotted down a synopsis of life as of late…

After spending a year in Hawaii I moved back to La Jolla for a few months to lifeguard WindanSea and Blacks, which is where I came up with the idea to start a custom surf travel company called SeaMonster with fellow Matuse family member, Sebastian Slovin.

Along with the travel company, I also decided to put my writing to the test, creating a blog full of useful information for ocean enthusiasts called HungryWalrus.com. As soon as the blog template was built and ready to fill with content, I hit the road, and have been traveling for eight months.

Started the trip working as a boatman on Tavarua Island, Fiji, before bouncing around a few of the Hawaiian Islands to hang and surf with friends. In Hawaii I got a call to take a group of really nice clients on a SeaMonster surf trip to Playa Colorado, Nicaragua. From there I headed to La Jolla for a couple days to celebrate the life of Ted Smith, one of my good friends who passed away surfing WindanSea while I was in Nicaragua. After the ceremony I went to Morocco for a month with Matuse family members Mike Millin and Sebastian.

Spent an incredible night in London, and a couple more in California, on my way back to Hawaii from Africa. When I landed on Kauai the entire place was under water with the worst rain they had in years, so I went with my gut feeling, and after a couple days on the island, booked a last second ticket to Tahiti for a swell – and decided to stay.

Been surfing Teahupoo everyday for the past month with good friends. In-between surf sessions I’ve been diving, and enjoy living a really simple life in the Teahupoo valley.

My Philo 1mm body armor is great protection from the sun and multiple reef slams down here.

Not sure where I’m going from Tahiti, but am planning on heading back to WindanSea in a couple months to lifeguard.

So fortunate to be able to keep moving, and really appreciate all the support from my Matuse family and friends. Best suits in the world!

The 1st annual Handplane Hoedown is on. The swell forecast looks really fun for Sat and should serve up some great rides for everyone. Gary from Brownfish will have handplanes on hand, Danny Hess from San Francisco will be attending with his handplanes, Ed Lewis of Enjoy will be there along with many legendary Wedge(Newport Beach) bodysurfers.
