From DC to PB

I love humid weather but only when an ocean and preferably a wave is nearby. So when I trekked from Capitol Hill to my hotel in Georgetown last week and the sweat poured in the 95 degree heat I was ready to shed my office garb and rinse off the congressional grime. I had one more day of lobbying for ocean and marine wildlife legislation at the 2013 Blue Vision Summit in Washington DC but I knew water time was right around the corner.

Two days after weaving the senate halls, hailing taxis and conference lunches I was on the sand in Pacific Beach getting jazzed for my first heat for the 2013 Pi Beta Phi Surf Classic. Ten years running the contest is one of San Diego’s largest Pro-Ams. I hadn’t surfed a heat in a while but after a few days sweating in DC I was frothing to get the jersey on. With consistent south swell, sunshine and a hundred bikini-clad sorority sisters cheering every punt, turn and heat win the contest was a blast. Although I fell short of victory, my third place finish pocketed me a few hundred bucks and provided me much needed water time. Congratulations to Shawn Burrell and Eric McHenry for taking the win and second.
