He has since committed himself by training hard, maintaining a positive attitude and putting himself on the line whenever the swell models blink brightest. Now Derek is a world-renowned big wave surfer, winning an XXL Monster Paddle award in 2009 and following it up with the 2010 Surfer Poll Worst Wipeout award for a beastly fall on a mountain-sided wave at Mavericks. In this episode of InnerViews, we look at Derek’s big wave exploits as well as discover his passion for photography and filmmaking. Matuse Family Member, Nick Ferreira, sent over a shot from his recent travels in the South Pacific. That’s as specific as he’d get. But if you’ve been lucky enough to surf this spot you know that you’ll need a very fast board to keep up with this barrel. You’ll also need to be comfortable surfing alone or bring your own pack. Nick said he was the only one out for every surf session. With the recent shortage of swell in the Northern Hemisphere it’s time to book a flight and get your own picture of epic perfection.
