Big ups to Matuse family member Clifford Kapono and Clint Edwards. Surfing has brought massive attention to waves in Hawaii, Fiji, Micronesia and Tahiti, making these reefs arguably the most famous pieces of ocean floor in the world. But we know almost nothing about the structure and health status of the coral reefs under these waves as none of them have ever really been studied from an actual scientific standpoint … despite their importance to the communities outside of surfing that also rely on them (ie reefs = fish habitat). Cliff and Clint will be working with each other to get recognized and funded by the National Geographic Expeditions Granted program. A panel of National Geographic judges will select 10 finalists out of the 700+ entrants and from there one winner will be selected by a public vote Sept 16-18. Mike Muller in Huff-Po and most recently featured in the newest addition of the New York Times Magazine for his recent photo of a Great White breaching the ocean’s surface at night. What is spectacular about this capture, is that it had never been done before. Mike was able to capture this moment with his technical prowess and of course savvy and experience shooting these amazing creatures. It is shark week so give extra consideration and love to these incredible animals and stay up on what Mike is doing to save them. Matuse loves White Mike.
