Pat Millin Surfing The Big Arctic Chill

Check out Matuse Family Member, Pat Millin, in a recent article in The Australian (The Heart of The Nation). The online publication for Australia featured the recent journey Pat and a few friends took to Norway and the Northern European coastline in search of uncharted waves and adventure. Check the excerpt from the article below:

“In fact, Pat Millin, the most extroverted of the group, made a heroic effort to strengthen US-Norwegian relations. “She worked at the place where we were staying,” he says. “She was so hot. Norwegian girls have skin that has never seen the sun. It’s like porcelain. We were like, ‘Oh my god, they’re beautiful.’ At first, this girl, Hilda” – he pauses and repeats “Hiiiildaaa!” in a comical Norwegian accent – “she was a bit icy. I was like, ‘What’s wrong with this girl?’ But then I just kept rapping with her and being flirty, building a relationship…”

Millin has fond memories of the trip, and not just thanks to Hilda. “I’m totally into that cold, raw feel,” he says, “especially in this day and age, when every other surf spot is surfed out. It’s pretty rare to come along and find a spot for the first time and name it.” (According to surfing tradition, the first person to catch a wave at a break assumes naming rights, which the group did on several occasions.) “It just made me in awe of the world. It’s so untouched up there. I was so inspired by the whole coastline. It’s like being near the tip of a mountain, going snowboarding, but you’re at the beach. I’d keep forgetting that I was at the beach. That was radical, coming from southern California.”
