Event organized and piece written by Matuse Family Member Zach Plopper. Zach Plopper is the Wildlands Conservation Program Coordinator for WiLDCOAST.

The Baja California Peninsula contains one of the least developed coastlines in North America, with some of the most perfect point breaks and unique ecosystems on the planet. It is also one of the world’s coastlines with the highest pressure to be destroyed by unregulated, unsustainable development. The rapacious construction of mega‐resorts, marinas, golf courses, condominiums, liquefied natural gas plants and salt extraction facilities is threatening not only swaths of pristine coastline and the habitats they serve, but the livelihoods of local communities as well. In response to these threats, WiLDCOAST is working to conserve these undeveloped coastal ecosystems in perpetuity, to maintain public access to the coast, and to empower local people to become effective stewards of wildlife habitats throughout the peninsula. It is no coincidence that the region’s biodiversity hot spots and most threatened locations are also home to its magical point breaks. Through direct purchases, conservation easements and partnerships with Mexican federal agencies, WiLDCOAST has helped fend off projects that would have destroyed the cracking barrels and pristine fisheries of Punta Abreojos, the grey whale breeding ground of Laguna San Ignacio and some of central Baja’s flawless sand bottom points.

WiLDCOAST is continuing to expand its protection of these areas and you can support their cause. Come out to Bare Back Grill in downtown San Diego on Friday, June 19th and help WiLDCOAST continue its conservation efforts in Baja so you and future generations will be able to enjoy these special places. Stop by and enjoy some groovy tunes, killer food and drink deals, a glimpse of Matuse’s premium summer wetsuit line and a raffle with killer prizes from Matuse, The Surfer’s Journal, Apple, Surfline, Patagonia and many more. All of the event’s proceeds will benefit WiLDCOAST’s Wildlands Conservation Program. Festivities will kick off at 8 p.m. For more information about WiLDCOAST, check out their website at www.wildcoast.net and learn about other ways you can help. See you Friday!
